Frequently Asked Questions
How often will we meet?
Many clients start with weekly sessions to build momentum, and then adjust to biweekly or monthly as progress is made. We’ll collaborate to find a rhythm that works best for you.
Do you work with children, teens, adults or couples?
I currently see teens and adults for individual therapy. I work with children and adults for psychological and psychoeducational assessments (6 years and older). I currently do not offer couples or family therapy, however, I am happy to refer you to a trusted colleague to help meet your needs.
Are services covered under insurance?
Most local insurance companies offer coverage for psychological therapy services, with varying coverage amounts. Please contact your specific insurer for coverage details or review your respective policy documents. Once covered, services are paid up-front and clients can bring claim forms at the time of services to be completed and submit to their insurer.
How do I pay for services?
Payments can be made by cash or bank transfer, at the time of service.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice incur the full session fee. Emergencies and unforeseen circumstances are considered on a case-by-case basis.
How long will therapy take?
Duration varies based on individual needs. Some clients benefit from 8-10 sessions, while others may require longer-term support. We'll discuss recommendations at your initial assessment.
Is everything I say confidential?
Absolutely, yes! Your privacy is very important. The only exceptions are very rare situations required by law, such as safety concerns for yourself or others, including to minors and elderly individuals. I’ll explain these in more detail during our first session.
What do I need to bring to my first session?
Just yourself. If you’d like, you can write down a few thoughts about what you’re hoping to work on, but it’s not required.
What if the fees for services are out of reach?
Dr. Frost offers a limited number of reduced-fee slots for individual therapy. If you are interested in exploring a reduced rate, please mention it before your first session. When available, these lower-cost options are offered for a limited number of sessions.
If a reduced-fee spot is not currently open, you may choose to be placed on a waitlist. Additional options such as shorter or less frequent sessions may also be considered, depending on your clinical needs. In some cases, Dr. Frost may recommend a referral to another provider whose services better fit your budget.
What does "licensed clinical psychologist" actually mean?
A Licensed Clinical Psychologist is a mental health professional who has completed a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in psychology, extensive supervised clinical training (3000+ hours, including internship and postdoctoral fellowship), and has passed national and state licensing exams. This licensure means the psychologist is legally recognized by the state, and the title of "psychologist" is protected under law, to provide psychological assessments, diagnosis, and evidence-based therapy.
Clinical psychologists are trained to help people understand and manage emotional, behavioral, and mental health challenges using scientifically supported approaches. They adhere to strict ethical standards and maintain ongoing education to ensure the highest level of care.
*Trinidad & Tobago does not currently have a regulatory board to govern the field of psychology. My license is governed and regulated by the State of Colorado, in the United States.
What is the main difference between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist?
Psychiatrists and psychologists are both professionals who specialize in the field of mental health, but they differ in terms of education, training, and practice (Sievert, 2023; UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine).
  • Psychologists are professionals who have advanced degrees in psychology. They are trained to evaluate, diagnose and treat mental health disorders through various forms of therapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, psychoanalytic therapy, and dialectal behavior therapy. Psychologists can also administer various psychological assessments to evaluate cognitive, emotional, and psychological functioning concerns.
  • Psychologists cannot prescribe medications, but they often work closely with psychiatrists and other medical professionals to provide comprehensive care for their clients.
  • Becoming a psychologist, which is a protected title in many jurisdictions, typically involving the completion of a doctoral degree in psychology (a Ph.D or Psy.D), which can take 4-7 years of postgraduate study plus another 1-2 years of clinical training. This is then followed by taking board exams to establish licensure. It is important to note, that in some jurisdictions, such as Trinidad & Tobago, clinicians possessing a Master's degree can provide some psychological services, often referred to as counsellors, psychotherapists, marriage and family therapists, or social workers.
On the other hand...
  • Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can diagnose and treat mental health disorders through a combination of therapy, medication, and other medical interventions.
  • They have the authority to prescribe medications and perform medical procedures related to mental health.
  • They must complete both medical school (to earn an MD/MBBS/DO) as well as a residency program in psychiatry. So it typically takes 8-10 years of postgraduate study to become a psychiatrist.
